The choke collar makes my dogs eyes pop out of her head (literally). She's a corgi and I'm having a hell of a time teaching her heel! So I thought either a halter or harness would be easier to use when doing heel lessons. Any heel command tips are also appreciated!
Which is better, the gentleleader halter, or the easy walk harness?
Personally I use a gentleleader on my dogs, but some people don't like them because they ae afraid they will hurt their neck. The biggest problem with the gentle leader is getting the dog use to it. I have seen people use the gentle harness I personally don't care for it, but it is affective if the dog isn't to big which you'd have no problem there. With trainingto heel I use treats and practice. First we go out in the back yard, then we start walking and if they go a head I turn tail and run so they keep an eye on me, next I start using the word heel before I step off and they follow if they go ahead I stop and wait for them to come back. I've used the treats on really young dogs to coax them to heel, but you will get a sore back and the dogs want to jump up. Good luck
Reply:i have a very stubborn whippet with the same problem. we just moved to a high rise in the city so he has to go on the elevator and 4 walks a day on the leash because we no longer have a yard for him to run free. I've been using the gentle lead halter and our walks are much more pleasant FOR BOTH OF US. try using small training treats at times that she does the command, eventually ween her off the treats and reward with petting and telling her good dog. good luck
Reply:"Easier" at WHAT???
Getting *YOU* off the hook so you don't have to WORK at TRAINING???
Those are *BOTH* CRAP!!! NEVER use a POS harness unless your TRACKING OR SLEDDING!!!! They ONLY teach a dog to PULL!
You're obviously NOT using the slip-collar CORRECTLY!! *POP* %26amp; RELEASE! HARD %26amp; FAST!
Try a PRONG type %26amp; don't WUSS OUT!!!!
Reply:I have an easy walk harness. My big puppy 8 months old and 50+ pounds pulled sooo bad, and this works wonderful. She doesn't pull at all! The ONLY down side is it fits fairly tight against the back of the front legs and you have to watch for chaffing. HTH
Reply:The easy walk harness is better because it don't apply as much pressure to the neck with the gentle leader halter you can rip the dogs head right off if your not careful.
Reply:I learned that most people (including myself) do no know how to properly use a choke chain. You're supposed to keep your dog on a short lead, with the choke chain up at the top of the neck. Do not give your dog enough slack so that she gets the chance to bolt causing her to choke herself. I have never used any of the collars you're talking about with my dogs. I have however dicussed the choke with a couple different trainers.
Sorry I don't have more for you.
Reply:I would say use the gentle leader. I have seen more positive results with this method than a harness. With the gentle leader you have control of where the dog's head is and what it can look at which lets the dog know who is in control.
Reply:we've been using the gentle leader and it's the only thing that has worked for our dog. she would choke and gag with the pinch collar, and make her neck raw with everything else. and we found that a harness only gave our dog more leverage to drag us around.
to comment on another post, you can't rip the dog's head off by using the gentle leader. that's just stupid. that person obviously wasn't using it properly or didn't really know what they were talking about.
if you go to a pet store and they fit your dog for the leader, and teach you how to use it correctly (or you watch the included training video), you'll learn that a quick tug when your dog is pulling gives a little sideways jerk to their chin, telling them when they're doing something wrong. it has been great. if we didn't have it, i wouldn't be able to control our 70 lb dog.
