We have an incorrigible male Golden. No matter what we do he manages to break out of the yard and romp?

around the neighborhood. Made the fence 7 ft high where he likes to go out and he flew right over it. He wants the girl to come out to so we have seen him actually pull on the boards in the fence and pop the nails right out. We got a shocker collar...didn't faze him. Put him in a chain link run. He dug under. It is a good sized yard but he wants out at all costs. Daughter put up an electric fence...shocked her and he stood right on it and didn't faze him at all. Took him to the park for dogs to let him run. He found a way out and ran on the outside of the huge encosure while the female ran along inside. We give up. The police know him and bring him back, but, they could give us a huge fine if they had the inclination. What makes him this way? We got him when he was about 5 months old. He is teaching our very sweet girl a lot of bad habits. Should we get rid of him? What to do? Mmm

Some dogs are just "Houdinis".

Some people have lazy, couch potato dogs, you have the opposite.

Neutering is a must. You won't get anywhere with training or keeping him in the yard if he has his boy hormones keeping him wild.

Obedience training will help, but if your not home to give him the commands to stay in the yard, it doesn't do any good.

Other things to try:

This thing is genius.

Allows running, but won't tangle him up, and he can't chew loose because all the cables are over his head.

Doggie day care/pet sitter. Consider finding someone to take him during the day while you aren't home. (kennels/boarding won't take him intact, at least the reputable ones won't)

Take up jogging or teach him to run next to a bicycle. These dogs have so much energy. You have to run them every day! For at least an hour, more is better!
Reply:Neuter him. Take him for more walks so that he burns off some of his energy. Other than that I can't think of anything else there is to do...
Reply:Sounds like he needs a job to do. Rally, Agility, Obedience work. How often is he walked each day? What kind of exercise does he get? Goldens are full of energy and they need a way to use up this energy or they will run off or become destructive (like any dog that is bored)

Train...don't Complain
Reply:Well I dont hear anything about obedience traing! He needs it badly!

Add: I have 2 big male Golden here with me and a pup too. They all stay right here in my yard. No romping nor roaming. I trained my dogs. I think your Golden needs it right away too.
Reply:NEUTER HIM!! Than take them both for long long walks or runs daily to burn off energy.. He seems bored so he is digging, jumping and roming. If you dont take care of this problem soon he could get out and get hit by a car... get him fixed and the girl also... and take them for a long walk.
Reply:First he needs to be neutered. Second, dogs of that size need LOTS of exercise daily. He should also be socialized more.
Reply:Do you take him on alot of walks every day? It sounds like he just wants to go and see what is going on on the other side. He also sounds intelligent so he needs some stimulation inside the yard--toys to carry around or something to work at like his own digging yard. Try exercising him more to help get rid of his anxiety and energy.
Reply:Get rid of him.hmmm. no.. You should TRAIN him.. right after you get him neutered.
Reply:lol thats the funniest story " doesnt faze 'em " lol have u guys tried dicipline or mayb lik cement a part of ur yard lik back corner and then biuld and cage on top of it so he cant get out ( put a roof ) thats wat my niehbors do and there dogs doesnt get out lol hope helped
Reply:Take him to the vet,get him nuetered. He is prbobly looking for a female in heat. So nueter him and things will be fine
