Hi!
I just got my dog and my cat spayed yesterday. Talk about a nerveracking day! When they came home they were very lethargic, which I think is normal, and they didn't want to eat. This morning they still weren't interested in food or water, which makes me nervous. When I get home from work this afternoon I'll take off their E-Collars and coax them to have some water and hopefully some food.
The vet told me to give the cat and dog their pain medication in the morning and in the evening. I gave my dog her pain medication fine. My kitty has never been sick and never needed medications, so I gave her her meds this morning (syrup) and she took them, but once she started swallowing it she jumped straight up in the air and took off in to the other room. I had left her collar on. I was so worried that she was going to pop a stitch (internal stitches) or something. I pet her once she was in the other room and she seemed fine, but I'm so nervous! What should I do? Is this normal?
My Dog and Cat just got spayed, are their actions normal??
Hi! I work at a vet clinic and what you're experiencing is completely normal.
I'm glad that you chose to get the pain medication for your animals.
The anesthesia does make them tired/lethargic coupled with the pain of having abdominal surgery.
You cats reaction is totally normal...you can help it by following with a syringe full of water to help wash down the meds. It's terrible tasting which is why they do that.
If your cat doesn't start eating tonight though, I would contact your vet and discontinue the pain medication - a side effect of the pain med is anorexia and/or an upset stomach.
Best wishes!
Reply:You should confine them each to a small area, the less they move around the better off they are.
Reply:Well what would YOU be like if you just got your uterus sucked out?
Reply:Hi, I just read your question and thought I would give you some insight...When I got my new kitten she had been spayed a day or 2 prior to getting her from the animal shelter. she was very young to have it done and my vet was concerned but she ended up being totally fine. To answer your question though, when she came home she was very lethargic, and it had been a couple days. they told us to just not play with her too much and let her rest. also, i noticed she wasn't realy eating but after under a week she was MUCH better and was totally playful and fine. I always say though, if you feel like somethings wrong just bring them to the vet. good luck!
Reply:Giving a cat medicine is NEVER easy! Dogs always seem to be more co-operative. But it is important that you continue to give her her meds....wrap her up really good in a bath towel and hold her like a baby to administer her medicine. This way, she can't squirm and you won't get scratched. You can also ask your vet if you can maybe mix her meds with food. This will be less stressful for you both. Also express your concern to your vet about popping internal stitches. I'm sure it would take a lot of physical activity for that to happen and you probably have nothing to worry about...but ask to put your mind at ease.
